Basic Memory
by Basic Machines
A memory in Markdown files that your agent reads and writes, openable in Obsidian.
View on GitHub →What it does
- Your memories are text files you can re-read and fix
- MCP server: Claude Code and other clients use it directly
- AGPL licence: worth knowing if you want to build it into an online service
Install it
Requirements: Python (uv).
Install
uv tool install basic-memory --prerelease=allow
Add it to Claude Code
claude mcp add basic-memory -- uvx --prerelease=allow basic-memory mcp
The prompt for your agent
Paste it into your coding agent: it checks the requirements and installs it for you.

Prompt
Install Basic Memory (https://github.com/basicmachines-co/basic-memory) on my machine.
1. Check the requirements: Python (uv). If anything is missing, tell me before installing anything.
2. Follow the official method:
- Install: uv tool install basic-memory --prerelease=allow
- Add it to Claude Code: claude mcp add basic-memory -- uvx --prerelease=allow basic-memory mcp
3. Check that it works, then explain how to launch it and where to start.
Always review what your agent is about to run, especially install commands.
